Golfers Against Cancer

“Makes a Difference”

The twelfth annual Golfers Against Cancer Beneficiary Luncheon was held February 23, 2008 in Houston.  The theme for these past twelve years has been “Making a Difference.”  Golfers Against Cancer‘s mission to raise as much money as possible to fund promising cancer research projects that result in saving lives is making a difference.  Golfers Against Cancer an all-volunteer organization has the unique opportunity to review research initiatives and then in choosing can place funds directly into the hands of the research doctors. 

On February 23  we were honored to have research doctors gathered to receive funds that would further their promising projects.  GAC board members handed checks directly to the doctors and had the opportunity to hear how GAC funds help in “Speeding the Cure.”  The following research institutions and doctors were present on this very special day.  Read about the projects that GAC is funding and what hope they offer to all those battling cancer.

The Methodist Hospital

•  Dr. Shanda Blackmon –Lung/Metastasize—stereotactic radiation—abracheytherapy  endobroncial debridement, endobroncial stenting—Phase III trials
• Dr. Daniel Lee –Solid tumors---radioisotope therapy/PET/CT,SPECT/CT fluorescence imaging/selective cell death

MD Anderson

• Dr. Anne Tsao –Mesothelioma---study 2 proteins as potential targets of therapies against Src kinase & N-cadherin
• Dr. Robert Bast – Ovarian—novel combinations of blood test for early stage ovarian cancer

Baylor College of Medicine

• Dr. Jonathan Levitt – Prostate/bladder solid tumors –enhance antic-cancer Phase I vaccines through modulation of dendritic cell inhibitory signaling
