Golfers Against Cancer’s 17th annual event is now history.. It was another successful year of raising funds for cancer research. The Gala was held on November 23rd, 2013 at the Humble Civic Center with a crowd of over 350 attendees who participated in the silent and live auction, hosted by our wonderful Highland Threads team.
The entertainment included performers Chris Rich, Paula Trickey, Steve Azar, Ira Dean and Dan Tyminski. Chris was once again the auctioneer for the live auction and did a great job of making it a lively event with lots of spirited bidding from the attendees.
Two Special Honorees for 2013 were named, Bob Howe of Boston, who started the New England chapter of GAC and Joyce and Bob Drucker who have participated in all of Walden on Lake Conroe’s efforts.
The Person of the Year was Stephen Clay Long of Outback Steakhouse. Stephen and his crew have been long time providers of the after tournament meal that all of the golfers really enjoy and look forward to. Stephen and his crew, once again, provided the meal on Monday the 25th of November even though the conditions were very chilly and wet and once again it was well received by the participants.
The Sponsors Tournament on Sunday the 24th of November was played in chilly and brisk weather, but it stayed dry and everyone had a great time. United Airlines once again provided breakfast tacos for all the participants before they teed off and then provided fajitas at the conclusion of the day. A great time was had by all.
The main tournament on Monday the 25th had to be called off due to the wet and cold conditions. A few brave souls ventured out onto the course and played a few holes despite the inclement conditions. And as mentioned above a great meal of steak and chicken was provided by Outback Steak House.
Gofers Against Cancer will select projects over the coming months to provide researchers with seed money to develop new cures for cancer. This seed money often leads to National Institute of Health and National Cancer Institute grants that make these projects begin saving lives in a much shorter period of time.
Thank you to all of you who participated in this years very successful event. GAC looks forward to your participation again next year and we invite everyone to our event next year and enjoy the festivities, the golf and the great food provided by United Airlines and Outback Steakhouse. While having a great time you will also be helping to find a cure for cancer.
