2004 New York Dinner for Cancer Research Is A Big Success
Press Release, September 29, 2004
The Golfers Against Cancer held their Third Annual Dinner for Cancer Research in New York City on September 27th. The purpose of the dinner is to raise funds for cancer research in our march toward a cure as well as enlist more supporters in our growing cause.
The New York City dinner was emceed by John O'Hurley, a.k.a. John Peterman from "Seinfeld", and Soledad O'Brien of CNN. The dinner was held at the historic New York Athletic Club on Central Park South and was hosted by Lynn and Betty Mangum and Bobby and Susan Jones who were joined by a committee of supporters.
New York attendees heard Dr. Neal Rosen of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center review the progress made in the projects funded by GAC during the past year. The breakthrough research included four new human clinical trials in cell biology and genetics for melanoma, brain, prostate and lung cancers. In addition, another project funded by last year's New York dinner has resulted in a potential breakthrough in determining the appropriate treatment of breast and prostate cancer based on protein 27.
This year's totals from the New York dinner will approach $300,000 before matching funds.
The bidding was lively with such unique auction items as a fishing trip to Alaska, trip to the Academy Award parties and a day of designing with a tour of the D&D. Continental Airlines, our presenting sponsor, donated the certificates for all air travel including its renewed BusinessFirst service around the globe.
The Third Annual Dinner for Cancer Research provides visible proof of our expanding efforts to speed a cure for cancer. We look forward to adding venues and growing the funds available for cancer research each year.
