Join us in New York City for our annual dinner.  This year's venue and date will be added soon.

Dinner for Cancer Research (DCR), like its parent organization Golfers Against Cancer (GAC), raises funds for cancer research in order to accelerate a cure. The first Dinner for Cancer Research was held in New York in 2002 under the auspices of Golfers Against Cancer. Since then, the New York event has raised approximately $3 million – including matching funds. Dinner for Cancer Research is unique in that every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research due to the support of two families who cover the cost of the event.

Golfers Against Cancer (GAC) was established in the summer of 1997 by a group of Kingwood, Texas golfers who wanted to help friends and family members diagnosed with cancer by raising funds for cancer research. GAC’s first fundraising golf tournament was held in 1997 and it generated $80,000. The growth has been rapid: a few short years later in 2002, the $1 million barrier was broken and by 2004 the event was bringing in $1.8 million. To date, GAC has raised over $13 million. By 2002, the circle of supporters had grown so large, that a second, non-golfing event was created, the Dinner for Cancer Research (DCR). Both GAC and DCR have become vehicles for golfers and non-golfers alike to support friends and family with cancer and to help speed the cure.

The funds generated enable groundbreaking research that often leads to human clinical trials and, based on results, government funding to spread the benefits quickly to patients. Beneficiary selection by Golfers Against Cancer is based on:

  • the most promising cancer research which will speed a cure
  • the assurance that the beneficiaries will use all donated funds for cancer research as opposed to administrative expenses
Preference is given to research causes using medical peer review to determine on-going project funding and monitoring progress. Finally, organizations that provide matching funds receive special consideration. Beneficiaries include the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research and the Prostate Cancer Foundation (formerly CaP CURE). The major recipient of funds to date from Dinner for Cancer Research (DCR) is Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York – New York-based research institutions will continue to benefit from funds raised in New York by DCR.

Proceeds from the Dinner for Cancer Research funds such projects as that by Dr. Neal Rosen at MSKCC in the cell biology and genetics areas. Dr. Rosen and his colleagues are designing new therapies that quickly translate to human application in several areas, including melanoma, breast, lung and prostate cancers. Another MSKCC recipient was Dr. Andy Koff who is researching the relationship of a certain protein secretion in various cancer tumors including prostate and breast to determine appropriate treatments. The results of his research have already led to becoming a key marker in determining the aggressiveness of treatment at leading cancer research institutions across the nation, including the University of California and Johns Hopkins University.

In addition to the generosity of the Jones and Mangum families, key corporate partners include Continental Airlines, and other major corporate sponsors.  All of us want to end the tragedy caused by cancer and together we can speed the cure
