A Loving Tribute to Michael Longpré
Sarah and Mike Longpre
It is with a heavy and sad heart that we said goodbye to a very courageous, young man. Michael Longpré, a loving husband, family man, friend, golf professional and Golfers Against Cancer Board Member, age 36, lost his battle to brain cancer on Saturday, September 27, 2003. Michael's passing has left a void that will never be filled. His contagious smile, quick wit and love of life will be greatly missed. He was an inspiration to us all.

Michael had long been the inspiration behind the efforts of GAC. Michael was the first Special Honoree of GAC in its inaugural year of 1997. He and his wife Sarah have been instrumental in making this organization a success. Sarah asks that in honor of Michael, donations be made to the Golfers Against Cancer research fund. It was Michael's dream to conquer this disease and now in his passing we move forward with increased dedication to honor his life and fight this disease.

Our goal and mission this year will have an even more special meaning, because Michael's memory will guide our efforts to work tireless hours so we can raise more funds than ever before. Please join us in 2003 at the Humble Civic Center for the Saturday night dinner/gala, as well as participate in the golf tournament to pay tribute to Michael, Dave Roberts and all those that have battled cancer. As our tribute, Golfers Against Cancer and all volunteers will work in knowing "A cure is out there...let's find it."

Michael's loss makes it imperative that the efforts of the GAC remain as focused as ever. GAC is an all-volunteer organization that has donated nearly $4 million dollars in direct and matching funds since 1997, and last year alone, $1.2 million was donated. The proceeds go to support many innovative and promising research efforts to save lives in Houston and across the nation.

"Dinner for Research" raises close to $400,000 in New York
The Golfers Against Cancer held the second annual "Dinner for Research" the evening of September 27 in New York City. This dinner in New York was intended to raise funds for research as we continue our march toward a cure. The dinner was held at the historic New York Athletic Club on Central Park South, and was hosted by Lynn and Betty Mangum and Bobby and Susan Jones. In addition, a fantastic Dinner Committee of 21 people in New York was formed this year, which add tremendously to the success through their participation, solicitation and enthusiasm.

It was a fun evening of entertainment, delicious food and exciting silent and live auction items. The live auctioneer was the multi-talented John O'Hurley, aka J. Peterman on Seinfeld. Grammy award winner, talented composer and fiddler Mark O'Connor performed a moving program.

The dinner hosted research doctors from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. It was an honor to talk with and learn about the promising research that Drs. Michel Sadelain, Neal Rosen and David Solit are working so hard on to find a cure for cancer. An NBC news story on Sadelain's innovative research on prostate cancer was shown. This project was funded by the 2002 event and now moves toward human clinical trials. Rosen then discussed one of this year's beneficiary projects using gene therapy for melanoma cancer. The funds we raise and the projects we support have and will make a tremendous impact on saving lives.

The evening was a huge success. With the help of many generous sponsors and individuals, close to $400,000 was raised for cancer research. Continental Airlines, GAC presenting sponsor, donated airline tickets to Europe and across the United States. Auction items also included cruises, amazing beach house vacations, J. Peterman perfumes, a Peter Max signed painting, New York Yankees grandstand tickets and much, much more. The bidding was fast an furious with John O'Hurley serving as our live auctioneer.
