Boston Dinner

Golfers Against Cancer makes strides for cancer research at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center
Golfers Against Cancer (GAC) hosted a special Dinner for Cancer Research at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Boston on October 4, 2006. The proceeds from the event benefited breast cancer research at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, offering new hope for adults and children with cancer and vital support for physicians seeking answers in the search for a cure.

As a result of this ongoing partnership, the Cancer Center is able to further innovative research that holds promise for saving the lives of people with cancer. The support is invaluable, allowing the Cancer Center to rapidly transfer knowledge from the bench to the bedside, benefiting patients not only at Massachusetts General Hospital but worldwide.

About the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center
A single place. A world of care.

An integral part of one of the world's most distinguished medical centers, the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center is chosen by more cancer patients than any other hospital in New England.

Its commitment to eradicating cancer is fueled by scientific investigation conducted as part of the largest hospital-based research program in the United States. Known for providing individualized, compassionate care to both adults and children, the Cancer Center is comprised of 16 fully integrated, multidisciplinary clinical programs and a vast network of support and educational services. The Cancer Center is consistently ranked as one of the best in the country by US News and World Report, while its nurses were the first in the state to achieve Magnet status as part of a hospital-wide recognition for exceptional nursing care.
Through a powerful synergy between scientists in the laboratories and physicians at the bedside, the Cancer Center fosters innovation in basic, translational and clinical research in an effort to detect, treat, and eventually prevent the many forms of human cancer. Cancer Center investigators have contributed to our understanding of how cancer progresses and how it is most effectively treated.
The Cancer Center has pioneered advances in the understanding and treatment of cancer that range from

• Cancer genetics. Among the first to identify “genetic markers” that can help to identify an individual’s risk factors for different types of cancer

• Radiation and proton beam therapy. Home to the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center, the only proton beam center in the Northeast, and a leader in intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). These therapies eliminate cancer while protecting healthy tissue.

• Surgical oncology.  A variety of new technologies and innovations, including radio frequency ablation of tumors and minimally invasive surgeries.

• Molecular imaging. The use of molecular imaging and “nanotechnology” to detect microscopic cancers.

• “Smart Drugs.”  The development of therapies designed to leave normal cells unaffected while targeting cancers associated with specific DNA mutations.
