Golfers Against Cancer was started in the summer of 1997 by members of the Deerwood Club in Kingwood, Texas. The group was founded to show support to several Deerwood members and staff who had been diagnosed with cancer at the time. The mission of Golfers Against Cancer was to raise funds for cancer research to honor these friends battling cancer.
In a few short months after its founding, Golfers Against Cancer raised over $80,000 in its inaugural 1997 events. The response continues to grow as Golfers Against Cancer has become a vehicle for golfers and non-golfers alike to honor their friends and help speed the cure for cancer. The group raised almost $300,000 in 1998, over $500,000 in 1999, and over $825,000 in 2000 and over $975,000 in 2001 for cancer research. In 2002 we broke the $1 million barrier. In 2003 $1.6 million, 2004 $1.8 million and for 2005 and 2006 almost $3 million each of those years for a grand total of over $13 million since we started.
Since our first tournament, others around the world have seen the value of giving to Cancer Research and we now have dinners in New York, Atlanta, Greensboro and Boston.
