2014  RESEARCH GRANT AWARD SUMMARY

2014 marked our eighteenth year of fund raising in the Houston area. We awarded twelve cancer research grants with a total funding of $565,000 (including matching funds).

In February 2015 we held our annual Beneficiary Luncheon and presented awards to researchers from five local institutions.

The twelve research projects, listed by title and organization, address a variety of cancers:  pancreatic, liver, ovarian, esophageal, retinoblastoma, glioblastoma, osteosarcoma, neuroblastoma, breast, and prostate.

MD Anderson (MDA)

  • Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) vs Esophagectomy for Early to Intermediate State Esophageal Cancer
  • Targeting the JNK Pathway for Controlling Metastasis in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer
  • Early Detection of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

Prostate Cancer Foundation

  • Funds provided to The Methodist Hospital Michael Ittman Laboratory focused on the molecular genetics of human prostate cancer and the pathobiology of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

  • Immunotherapy for Glioblastoma Multiforme by Targeting PHF20
  • SUMOylation of Kruppel-Like Factor-4 and the Inhibition of Cholangiocarcinoma Pathogenesis
